byward Market

The Byward Market is one of the most well known districts throughout Ottawa. This is where you go to find some amazing food, historic sites, and a great time. The Byward Market boundary runs along Sussex Dr, MacKenzie Ave, and Cumerbland. The northern end of the Byward Market is boarded by Cathcart St and the southern end by Rideau St. The district is named after the original surveyor St-Colonel John By, who was sent from England in 1826 to oversee the construction of the Rideau Canal system. The Byward Market has such a rich history of the diversity that made it was it is today. The market was first used as a market in 1827 to sell timber that was used for the construction of downtown Ottawa as well as used for the building of the Rideau Canal. The market is not only used to sell goods but it is also considered home to those that live in the residential areas and condominiums within the district.
