more about this ottawa condo

There are only a handful of converted condominium buildings like Ecole Guigues that can be found in Ottawa. This truly unique building was once one of Ottawa’s largest schools (built in 1904) and the land was used for a Francophone Roman Catholic school during the mid 1800’s.  Due to the rich history surrounding Ecole Guigues, the building is now considered a symbol for the Francophone language rights in Ontario. In 1980 the building was designated as one of Ottawa’s heritage buildings and the building began the restorative and conversion process in 1997 by architect Barry Padolsky. To keep with the original design of the school, Padolsky integrated Richardsonian Romanesque design into the restoration process so the conversation of old to new was cohesive.

This building stands at 4 storeys and contains 14 one and two bedroom units. The majority of the units feature gleaming hardwood flooring, 12ft ceilings, expansive windows that flood each room with natural light, a spacious primary bedroom with ample closet space, and in unit washer and dryer. The kitchens features lots of cabinet space, granite countertops, tiled backsplash, stainless steel appliances, and tiled flooring.

Residents living at Ecole Guigues are in walking distance to everything they could possibly need! Across the street on Sussex is the National Art Gallery and Notre-Dame Basilica. Just a few streets over is the infamous Byward Market where you will find lots of restaurants, bars, diners, bakeries, cafes, and so much more. During the warmer months part of the market is transformed into an open air market that offers fresh local produce, flowers, and preserves. Beyond the market is the Rideau Shopping Centre where there are 3 floors of stores, a food court, gym, and a Farm Boy on the first level.

Those that use public transit to get to and from work are a 10 minute walking distance to the Rideau LRT Station. Cutting down your time significantly as this will minimize or completely remove any connections you would have had to previously take.

Any outdoor enthusiasts will be happy to know that the Trans Canada Trail is a short walk, run, or bike ride from your front door. The trail extends from downtown Ottawa and out to the West End. You can stop along the way at the Westboro Beach and Cafe to catch some rays or to cool off in the Ottawa River.

Living at Ecole Guigues, you are a part of history!
