lowertown
Lowertown is one of the oldest parts of the city. It is bounded by Rideau St to the south, The Ottawa River to the west and north, and the Rideau River to the east. Lowertown crosses boundaries with the Byward Market. Lowertown has several embassies, part of the Byward Market, The National Art Gallery, Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital, and Global Affairs Canada.
At the Rideau Centre there is the LRT Rideau Station that will bring commuters through the downtown core and out west to Tunney’s Pasture or out to the east end at Blair Station. There are also local OC Transpo buses that run through lower town that will bring you to Rideau Centre to make a connection.
In Lowertown you will find several embassies along Sussex Dr and Boteler St. Towards the end of Sussex Dr and Green Island you will find the National Research Council of Canada, Global Affairs Canada and it’s secondary office on Green Island.
The National Art Gallery on Sussex Dr is one of Lowertowns major go to places. The Gallery is a place to walk around and admire works of art from around the world, check out once in a lifetime exhibitions, and enjoy a moment up on the hill behind the gallery. Across from the museum is the infamous Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica that is stunning inside and out.
Canada Day in the Byward Market is a one of a kind experience for those that have never been before. You get to experience music, street performances and an amazing fireworks show. Another annual event is the lighting of the Christmas Tree inside the National Art Gallery. Those that attend get to see a massive fully decorated tree light up all the while having some delicious hot chocolate and treats. It’s a perfect event for those with children, or for anyone of any age.
Within Lowertown you will find several yoga centres and gym locations including Upward Dog, Yoga Travels, Warrior Fit, Phoenix Boxing, Anytime Fitness, and AP Fitness.
