The History

12 Stirling Ave was recognized first as St. Francois D'Assie Separate School, built in 1933. Throughout the years the building was a mix-use development and housed an art gallery in the late 1980s and became the Odawa Friendship Centre in 1996. 

The building was re-zoned in 2013 for a mixed-use development, and by 2015 boutique developer Morely Hoppner and renowned architect Barry Hobin came together to build the condominium complex; Yard and Station. Some of the changes made to the building include demolishing the gymnasium to make way for the condominiums' parking garage, and updating the windows to be loft-style to better fit the aesthetic of the building. Some of the schoolhouse detailings, like the children reading books engraved into the stone of the building, remained untouched. 

The Design

"Inside, the redevelopment was approached as nine custom homes, taking advantage of the "blank canvas" that was offered by the renovation. As such, each purchaser was able to customize their plan to their unique style". - hobinarc.com

Each unit (there are 9 units in total) is completely different from one other in terms of design and layout. The units share two common elevators, but each home has its own elevator stop which leads right into their unit. Some units have direct access while others have a custom-made door that opens up to the elevator doors. Each unit also has its own staircase to be able to enter and leave the unit without needing to use the elevator, convenient since the building is only 3 stories. 

The Neighbourhood

Living in Hintonburg you are within walking distance of a lot of amenities which include a multitude of restaurants, bakeries, locally owned boutiques, and coffee shops. Just a few streets over are the famous Suzy Q Donuts with The Ministry of Coffee and Social Affairs right next door. Take advantage of the outdoors on warmer days by walking along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway which is a short 12-minute walk from 12 Stirling Ave. For those that use public transportation to get to and from work, Tunney's Pasture Station is a 9-minute walk away.
