More About This Condo

19 Melrose Ave was originally built as a Francophone school in 1912 and continued to be a school for nearly 100 years. When the school was built it was during a controversial moment in Ontario legislation as the Francophone community was going against the Ontario Government for the right to teach their children strictly in French. Thought the building is no longer used for education purposes, it still stands to pay homage to represent the struggle the French community had to go through to gain these rights.

In 2009 the school was converted into a hard-loft building by The Regional Group and Douglas Hardie Architects. During the redesign and conversion process, elements and design features of the building were kept in mind so the building remained true to its original form; windows were built to match the original school windows, and the clay canopy at the main entrance was preserved.

Entering the building, you can see some of the original school, but it is hardly recognizable with the added features of the units within. Hardwood floors, exposed brick and unit entrances greet you as you walk up the steps. Above each unit door is a set of glass blocks to create a window, similar to the windows we see today above modern classrooms.

Majority of the units feature two levels with an open concept living space, 12 foot high ceilings, exposed accent brick walls, one to two gas fireplaces, large kitchens with granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances, and double doors leading to a private balcony.

School House loft is located on Melrose Ave off of Wellington St in Hintonburg. Residents at 19 Melrose are within walking distance of everything that Hintonburg has to offer, including several restaurants, coffee shops, butcher and deli shops, as well as the infamous SuzyQ Doughnuts. For groceries and other necessities there is a Metro a 19 minute walk or Farm Boy is a 31 minute walk from your front door. Outdoor enthusiasts will be happy to know that down the street from the Farm Boy is the Mountain Equipment Co for all your outdoor needs.

Within a 30 minute walk is the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway where you can enjoy running, walking, or biking during the warmer months and check out the scenic stops along your journey. The parkway leads you to Westboro Beach and Cafe where you can catch some rays or take a dip in the Ottawa River.

Those that take public transit to work will be happy to know that Tunney’s Pasture where the LRT Station is located within a 16 minute walk of 19 Melrose. Making your commute to work a breeze.
